CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW 2ND APRIL 2023
What a wonderful time I had judging this beautiful breed. The show was held in an excellent venue and the secretary Kay Stephenson made me very welcome. My stewards, Andy and Anna, kept my ring running in good order and my co-judge and I agreed on all the major awards. On the whole I was impressed with the excellent front angulation in the breed; most had very good length of upper arm.
DOGS.
MPD (5)
A class full of promise for the future. The length of upper arm on all of them was impressive.
- Darley’s Severnsett Gold Sovereign. A very promising puppy who is well balanced and has plenty of rounded bone. He has depth of brisket, a strong arched neck, good length and return of upper arm, round ribs and a well set on tail. His head is long and not too lean and he has expressive dark, oval eyes. Puppies of this age are often a bit flat footed and his will tighten. He carries a silky coat and moves well holding his head high and his tail on a level with his back. BPD & RBPIS.
- Danks-Kemish’s Ravensett Untouchable among Alolfrana. He has an air of elegance about him and is very well constructed and carries a long and silky coat. He stands on strong limbs and tight feet, has moderate length to his body and is short in back with an excellent tail set. His head is pleasant but a bit too narrow for my preference. Moves happily with ease.
- Seaman’s Mariglen Just George
PD (1)
- Bromwich’s Ilexset Primary Colour. This one really fulfils the standard when it comes to temperament; he is clearly extremely friendly and good natured. He has some way to go in body development but his head is balanced with a good stop and moderately deep muzzle.
Vet (2)
- Tompsett’s Radbrooks Sloop JohnB. He tends to stack with a slightly sloping topline but on the move he carries a strong level line and lashes his tail as he goes. He has great front and rear angulation. I loved his head with its kind eye and big nose. He clearly adores his owner/handler.
- Brown’s Mariglen Top Gear at Yendorlech. Slightly broader in skull than the winner and couldn’t match his footfall but he is of very good type with the most gorgeous expression, excellent front angulation and powers round the ring using his wide well muscled quarters.

Nov (2)
- Smith’s Bournehouse Secret Sunset of Meadowrush. Substantially made but carrying too much weight today and moving quite closely front and back. That said he has a very handsome head with a benign expression, has a strong well muscled neck, level topline and tight feet. Carries his tail well on the move.
- I. Primary Colour
Grad (5, 1 abs)
- Stewart’s Tattersett Golden Sunrise. I liked this youngster very much. He is impressive on the stack with his clean outline, short back and depth of chest. His skull is oval showing plenty of brain room and his moderately deep muzzle is fairly square and ends in a nice big nose with wide nostrils. He carries a beautifully silky coat and moves with precision and verve. A quality exhibit.
- Fisher & Bennett’s Quensha Man in the Mirror. Another quality dog who was unlucky to come up against the winner. He is rangier than the winner and just a few months younger which can make all the difference in juveniles. He is elegant in outline, has plenty of bone, good depth, correct tail set and stands on neat feet. Long, lean head, low set ears and dark eyes.
- Kelly’s Edge of Dreams at Archenset
Post Grad (4)
- Szal’s Sharnyx River Flow. Terrific temperament expressed by his ever wagging tail. Liked his head and eye, round ribs, well muscled quarters. Moved well lashing his tail as he went.
- Kelly’s Cornsett the Wise One. Very noble outlook, well balanced and well ribbed back. A bit wider in skull than the winner and not as good in front movement. Nicely muscled.
- Carr’s Balvenie Blue Lagoon
Mid Limit (6, 2 abs)
- Johnston’s Wansleydale Beguiled of Loonbrae. Presents a good outline with a rather long, muscular neck and good angulation. Balanced head with plenty of brain room and clear stop, low set ears. Moved well with good tail carriage.
- Vallance’s Rowanmyle Was a Skellum. Doesn’t have the strength in neck of the winner but has width between his shoulder blades, a level back and decent quarters. He has a lovely eye and expression.
- Cielecki’s Bramstorm Red Admiral at Annapurna
Limit (5, 1 abs)
- Wood’s Juldeane Prime Suspect (AI). He is very well constructed and displays a typical outline. Excellent forehand with length and return of upper arm and well laid shoulders. I loved his head with its oval skull, depth of muzzle, dark eyes with lovely chiselling below and wide nostrils. He holds his shape on the move and has an excellent driving action. Considered for RCC.
- Lawson’s Wansleydale Dorian Grey JW. Great ribbing on this dog and presented in fit condition. I preferred the shape of skull on the winner but this was nit picking. He is expertly handled and shows himself off a treat. Great tail action and covers plenty of ground on the move.
- Watt’s Walshaw Brushstrokes
Open (5)
- Poynter, Poynter and Lewis’ Quensha Cowboys and Angels. The last time I judged this breed he was best puppy dog and albeit with a different handler today he has certainly fulfilled the promise I saw in him then. He totally filled my eye with his muscular, fit body and high head carriage. He presents a superbly clean outline, has a short, level back, is a good size and has an air of nobility and elegance about him. He has well laid shoulders with good width between the blades and his brisket is well down to his elbows. He is straight in front with rounded and muscular bone and stands on tight feet with nicely arched toes. His ribs are well sprung and round and carried well back. He has wide, slightly arched loins and when viewed from behind has a strong muscular flare over his hips. He is very well muscled all through and has a good bend of stifle. His head is so very handsome, long and lean with plenty of brain room and low set ears. His ever wagging tail and mild, expressive eyes are testament to his friendly good nature. He powered round the ring lashing his tail whilst maintaining his excellent shape. He could have carried more feathering today which was my deciding factor in agreeing to the bitch being best in show. I was delighted to award him the CC and that my co-judge agreed to him being Reserve Best in Show.
- Danks-Kemish’s Sh Ch Ravensett Work of Art at Alolfrana. A very good dog indeed. His head is long and lean with oval skull, clear stop and low set ears. He is well angulated with very good length and return of upper arm. He moves effortlessly on a long stride. RCC.
- Wilson’s Ravensett Giovanni

CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW 2ND APRIL 2023
Thank you to the hard working committee for a friendly, well run show. For an indoor show the venue is ideal with good lighting and plenty of space. A decent entry by today’s standards.
As someone that normally has critiques out soon after an appointment, I needed time to reflect before publishing this one. I am sure it would be better for future appointments and entries to say I was pleased with what I found, but I can honestly say I left this appointment heartbroken, and deeply concerned for our breed; one I have spent my whole life with.
There has been much talk ringside in the decline of entries and quality, but even so, it came as unpleasant surprise what I found. There is no depth in quality, and whilst one should always look for virtues, I was continually met with fundamental basic confirmational faults. I saw every shape and outline, but very few the correct one for an English Setter. Heads need watching, many are not long, lean and feminine. Fronts are of huge concern; narrow fronts, most have no forechest, and consequent lack of depth of chest, coat should go on top of the frame, not replace it. Movement was abysmal; close back action with a lack of drive, and fronts narrow, caving in due to the lack of forechest. This should be a galloping breed, most don’t look like they could make it to the end of the road. I’m not sure whether the smaller rings we now seem to have, judges are rewarding those that move with head high and tail slashing that can look good in a small ring where the lack of drive probably helps and the lack of ground covering action goes unnoticed, rather than a dog driving who will cover a small ring in less strides and potentially look less coordinated. I would urge breeders to look hard at their stock; in todays entries it is easy to win a lot of classes with an averagely mediocre one, and breeders must use their own benchmark for how good their stock is not based on show wins. I am well aware these are harsh words, and I won’t be popular for it; but we are at a critical time for our breed; we must all raise our games if the breed is going to return to the standards we saw not that long ago, let alone 20 or 30 years ago.
MP (1)
1st Owen’s Marwsett Ysobel Enigma at Cornsett, 7.5 months dark orange. Very promising baby, who is well developed for age, Ideal leg length to height and length proportions. Presents a good outline on the stack. Lovely feminine head with good work, and correct eye shape. Has good forechest and body development for age. Has good width to her all through, short strong loin, well angulated hindquarters, and width across the thigh. On the move she was sound both ways with drive behind. An easy BPIS.
PB (4)
1st Sharples’ Kanietter Sabonette, 9 month old blue, who in profile presents a clean outline, flowing from her neck topline, and correct over croup. Is tall for her age, and I hope she now widens as she develops. Is well off for spring of rib, short coupled, in good coat. Moved the best in this class.
2nd Stephenson’s Mariglen Wave Dancer. 11 month blue, preferred her head to 1, is in good coat, and has spring of rib for age. Holds her topline on the move, but was not cooperating with her handler on the move or the stack.
3rd Deville’s Fishwick Play It Cool
Veteran (2, 1ab)
1st McCabes’s Sh Ch Rachdale Elegance, this is a beautiful bitch, that at 8 still fills the eye, superb in outline, Beautifully worked feminine head, long neck into well laid shoulders, good return of upperarm, has forechest and a deep well sprung body, fabulous over the croup and tailset, and consequently has super width over the thigh, well bent stifle to short hocks. In lovely coat. Unfortunately, her boredom with proceedings is obvious on her lovely face, and whilst she goes soundly, has no enthusiasm or drive on the move which was a shame as she would have pushed for higher honours.
Junior (3)
1st Howarth’s Moorbrook Owdidthathappen, darkest blue in super coat and condition, lovely outline, stands on well boned legs and the neatest of feet, short, strong loin, well angulated hindquarters, good bend of stifle and let down to short hocks. Hope she has a last growth spurt in her.
2nd Owen’s Sharnyx Sparklin Starlight at Cornsett, Taller orange with decent bone and feet, feminine head, not as developed in body as 1, in good coat, needs to strengthen in front.
3rd Lowe’s Frennisett Rhydwen
Novice (3)
1st Sharples’ Kanietter Sabonette
2nd Smith’s Gold Mercury Beauty style of Meadowrush (IMP RUS), 4 year old, who in profile presents a balanced picture, mature in body, stands on good legs and neat feet, carrying too much weight.
3rd Lowe’s Frennisett Rhydwen
Graduate (8, 2ab)
1st Loakes Goldbirch Hearts Desire JW, won here comfortably, Very balanced and proportionate all round. Beautiful headed tri, with dark eye of correct shape. Long arched neck into well laid shoulders correct angle and return of upperarm. At just 2, has some maturing to still do in body, well angulated behind, with lovely finish to croup and tailset. Goes soundly and with animation, superbly presented in full coat.
2nd Dennis, Harris &Morgan’s Mariglen Unwrapped. Feminine head tri, with straight front. Balanced all through, well off for angulation and soundness all through, goes soundly, just not the finish of 1 at this stage.
3rd Jennings-Sharman &Sharman’s Wansleydale Mayfly.
Post Graduate (3)
1st Wale’s Chanina China Rose, Dark Orange of good size, with good height to length proportions. Feminine head with good work, long arched neck into firm topline, well angulated behind, and correct tailset, in full coat, still has some more maturing and tightening to do.
2nd Tompsett’s Leilasett Northern Lights over Radbrooks, stands on good legs and feet. Pretty head of good proportions, once in coat will create a more balanced picture.
3rd Felton-Blyth Wansleydale Sky Angel at Felsett.
Mid Limit (6, 1ab)
1st Mugford’s Alforana Sugar’n’Spice at Lynwood JW, I last judged her as a 6 month baby where she went BPIS. I loved her then and I still do. Has matured into a lovely girl who presents a superb shape on the stack. Feminine head with plenty of work, straight in front, well boned legs for her size, neat feet, superb in topline, hindquarters, croup and tailset. She might not be the biggest but she is perfectly balanced with everything fitting together, she goes with soundness, drive, and slashing tail, beautifully presented in good coat. I thought she might be in the higher honours, but just couldn’t match the bodies of the CC and res CC winners. Won this class with quite a lot to spare.
2nd Dykes Wansleydale Bedazzled at Caelyedene. Tri, old fashioned type, the sort mated right should produce. A tad matronly; a conditioning programme would help her make the best of her shape. Stronger in head than 1 but still feminine, well laid shoulders, well off for bone, and neat feet. Angulation front and back is balanced, moved with drive, and kept her topline which gave her the edge over 3.
3rd Darley’s Severnsett Dark Angel.
Limit (3,1ab)
1st Paton’s Bournehouse Secret Destiny at Meadowfoot. Dark orange with a beautiful feminine head, straight front, well boned legs and neat feet, deep through the body, short coupled, firm topline. On the move she moved with precision and drive, slashing her tail.
2nd McCabes Rahcdale Ribbons, lighter orange, balanced overall shape on this short coupled bitch, holds her topline, but couldn’t match one on the move or in body properties.
Open (6, 4ab) two top class bitches, who on a different day with different coats, and performances could easily change places. Loved different things about each of them. The breed desperately needs more bitches of this kind of quality.
1st Loakes Sh Ch Goldbirch Wings of Desire JW SHCM SHCEX, tri, who fills the eye, in profile is completely balanced with a clean outline, Beautiful feminine head with dark eye, long arched neck into text book shoulders, good in forechest, depth of chest and spring of rib, strong short loin, fabulous over the croup to perfectly set tail, perfect width across the thigh, bend of stifler and short hocks. On the move she goes soundly front and back, with power, drive with her head high on a loose lead, and slashing level tail. In full coat, immaculately presented, and it was this that gave her the edge over 2. In the challenge the change of handler did her no favours, but she had already done enough to secure the CC, and pleased my co-judge agreed to her being BIS
2nd Buckley’s Sh Ch Tattersett Cool Roxy at Fishwick, light orange, a mould stronger than 1, but beautifully feminine. Exquisite head, long arched neck into text book shoulders, superb forechest – if you want to feel what forechest should be, feel this one! Has a quality front, straight, with finish, beauty of line and balance, deep, mature body, short, strong loin,. Couldn’t quite match 1 over the croup. On the move she holds her topline, sound with drive, but just not the showmanship of 1 today. In good coat, but not yet full coat. A top class bitch I was delighted to award the ResCC.

It was an honour to be asked to judge at the English Setter Society of Wales Ch Show. A good well run show with a robust committee of good workers in an excellent new venue. A good way to make my final judging of this beautiful breed. I enjoyed the dogs immensely, five males really stood out for me having the construction, that I look for in any gundog. I was looking for masculine, not overdone dogs with your glorious English Setter head, set on good necks let into well made bodies, and some strength in movement to see them through a day out working. My husband has been lucky to be able to work all our dogs, and even though most people today may only show, we must never forget or try to change the original standard designed for a working dog.
I would have like to have seen many more decent fronts, many had the lay of shoulder, but lacked length and angulation in the upper arm, which did not put enough dog in front of the shoulder, because of the lack of angulation in the upper arm it also changes the movement in the forehand, the dogs have shorter choppy movement and often also toe-in. This is what happens when you get a Gundog All-rounder, lots of us are construction freaks!!
My co-judge Val Watkin and I were in agreement in judging Best in Show we both liked the two exhibits equally well, both really filled the eye, so we let the Referee Mrs Baker make the decision, the dog taking Kemish’s Best In Show, Mrs Danks-Sh Ch Ravensett Work Of Art At Alolfrana, with Mrs F Grimsdell’s Tattersett Dark Honey JW taking Reserve Best In Show. Best Puppy went to Mrs L Taylor’s Puppy Dog Wansleydale Maybee. Best Veteran went to Mrs S Cole’s male Sorbus Storm Ryder JW.

Championship Show
26th September 2021
Thank you for the opportunity to judge at this well run show. Although the entry was small there were some quality exhibits. A couple of things that did worry me in the breed was one or two incorrect mouths and the lack of muscle tone. Some movement left a lot to be desired, lacking impulsion. They should be a free moving breed with a graceful action and lashing tail.
BITCHES
Minor Puppy (1)
1st – Wale’s – Chanina Golden Rose – 8 month old orange with a fabulous head and eye, an expression to die for. Excellent neck leading into well laid shoulder, straight front, well bent stifles. Super tail and set, correct oval bone, moved out well on an even stride. Best Puppy bitch.
Puppy (1)
1st – Dennis’s – Mariglen Unwrapped – Tri with again a lovely head and expression, with nice eyes, straight front, level topline and correct tail set. Lovely coat and colour. Not the lay back of shoulder that I like to see.
Veteran (2)(1)
1st – Mortimer’s – Phlerdor Heart Of Gold – 7 years old in lovely condition, she has a pretty head and expression, well bodied with a good topline. Correct angulation all through, would just like tighter feet. Moved well.
Junior (1)
1st – Danks-Kemish’s – Mandyset Fame And Fortune At Alolfrana – Blue built on racey lines, not the body or bone for an English of this age, would prefer a better lay of shoulder. A short upper arm gives her a hackney action in front on the move. Lovely colour.
Yearling (2)
1st – Felton-Blyth’s – Wansleydale Sky Angel At Felsett – Another blue who has a lovely head and expression, good neck and shoulders, short back, well balanced fore and aft, moves a little close behind for me.
2nd – Owen’s – Beechanger Isabelina At Cornsett – A bit too strong in the head for me but she has good bone, lay of shoulder and forearm angulation is correct. Bigger all over than the winner although she moved with a lashing tail she lost her topline in profile, which spoilt her outline.
Maiden (1)
1st – Dennis’s – Mariglen Unwrapped
Novice (2)
1st – Felton-Blyth’s – Wansleydale Sky Angel At Felsett
2nd – Owen’s – Beechanger Isabelina At Cornsett
Graduate (5)(1)
1st – McCabe’s – Rachdale Ribbons Of Pearls – Light orange with a lovely head, eyes could be darker. Correct bone, stands on tidy feet, excellent topline. Good tail and set. Moved okay.
2nd – Mortimer’s – Phlerdor Will Of The Wisp – Heavier all through than the winner, but she has good angles to front and rear, moved out well in profile but a bit close behind.
3rd – Dykes’s – Wansleydale Bedazzled At Caleydene
Post Graduate (2)(1)
1st – Thacker’s – Hartsett Vanity Fair – Beautiful head and expression with lovely eyes. Fine in bone which gives her a narrow front. Good return of upper arm and well bent stifles. Tail set a little low, moved okay.
Mid Limit (2)
1st – Colton’s – Rowanmyle Gude Blue Bonnet Ennydloc – Elegant blue with correct length to neck and lay of shoulder. Level topline with excellent tail set. Well off for bone. Nice bend to stifle, moved out well keeping a level topline. Delighted to be able to award her the RCC.
2nd – Wale’s – Wansleydale Magic Rose JW – Orange carrying too much weight which spoilt her overall outline. Good bone well bent stifles, not the shoulders of the winner.
Limit (1)
1st – Williams’s – Bournehouse Precious Dream – Another orange who was carrying too much weight which makes her roll. She has a lovely classic head and expression, straight front with good lay back of shoulder, good return of upper arm. Excellent bone and feet. Well bent stifle, she is precise on the move keeping a level topline . Shown in excellent coat.
Open (2)
1st – Dennis, Harris & Morgan’s – Gemsett Ice Cold In Alex At Mariglen JW – Very close decision between these two oranges. Classic head and expression into a long neck with a good lay of shoulder and return of upper arm. Well bent stifle held her topline in profile .Moved with a lashing tail. Shown in lovely coat and condition. Glad I was able to award her the CC and later RBIS agreed along with my co-judge.
2nd – McCabe’s – Sh Ch Rachdale Elegance Jw – Another classic bitch, lovely head and kind expression, built on similar lines to winner has all the essentials. For me moves a little close behind.

My thanks to the Officers and committee of the English Setter Society of Wales for inviting me to judge the stakes classes at their Breed Club Championship show on Sunday 26th September 2021. It really was a great honour.
I am also very grateful to the exhibitors who entered under me, giving me the chance to place my hands on some top winning dogs, and who took my decisions in a sporting manner.
Many thanks also to my very able steward.
The Pat Mellish Memorial Special Yearling Stakes 5 (0)
1st Derry’s Balvenie Blue Sensation, 23 months old blue dog who stood out in the class. Nicely chiselled head with kind expression, low set ears and strong arched neck leading into very good shoulders. Very well off for bone with a great front and nice tight feet. Nicely ribbed body with deep chest, lovely angulation front and rear and a correct tail carriage. Moved out well from strong hocks, holding his topline as he went. Completed the picture with a full coat and presented to perfection.
2nd Wale’s Chanina Golden Rose, just 8 months old, this orange bitch showed herself off like a veteran. Pretty head with the darkest of eyes and a gentle expression, another with a lovely neck and good shoulder placement. When stood she is very compact and well angulated, very well off for bone without being heavy, a nice straight front and the neatest of feet. In very good coat for a youngster. Another with a correct tail carriage, she moved well and true which secured her this place amongst some very good competition.
3rd Pearson’s Sunsprake Close to the Edge at Yessandi.
The Pat Mellish Memorial Open Stakes 13 (2)
A lovely big class with quality exhibits, I had to split hairs on the day and wish I had place cards for all of them.
1st Darley’s Severnsett Firecracker, 2 year old tricolour dog. I have not seen this lad before but he caught my eye as I was making my first assessment. He has the most beautiful head with dark expressive eyes. His neck is strong and his front is straight with a good depth of chest. He has heavy bone without losing any elegance and the tightest of feet, short coupled and very well muscled, when stood he looks so very well balanced with good angulation. Shown in excellent coat. Held himself well on the move with correct topline and slashing tail.
2nd Danks-Kemish’s Sh Ch Ravensett Work of Art at Alolfrana Beautiful orange dog of 4 years old who I have placed well before. His head is well moulded with the darkest of eyes, well set ears and another lovely arched neck into a good layback of shoulder. Deep chest and strong legs with the tightest of feet, very well ribbed up, great angulation and correct tail carriage. Looked an absolute picture when stacked, very well presented as always. Sadly, today he didn’t move as well as I have seen him go, which was a great shame as he is a very worthy show champion.
3rd Normansell’s Latin Lover Rewind for Larrenie (Imp).

Thank you to the Officers and committee for my invitation to judge Dogs at their Ruby Anniversary show and to my 2 stewards who assisted me throughout the day.
With the agreement of my co-judge the main winners were;
BIS – SH CH Wansleydale Star Queen of Glenmaurangi
RBIS – SH CH Rachdale Sea Fever JW
BPIS – Alolfrana Sugar’n Spice at Lynwood
BVIS – SH CH Hartsett Cherry Bee JW
A clean outline and elegance are amongst many of the characteristics asked for in the standard. Combined together they give a lovely first impression to a judge in the ring and what I was hoping to find among the dogs today.
MINOR PUPPY DOG (3,2)
- Owen’s Cornsett You my Everything
Well bodied 8 month orange shown in good coat. Balanced head with dark eye. Handled better than his litter brother today who stood second. Moved steadily for a baby, using his tail.
- Kelly’s Cornsett the Wise One who gave his handler a hard time as babies sometime do! and thus was difficult to fully assess. Attractive colour.Good reach of neck. He was not as far on in body properties as his litter mate and was a little unsteady on the move, and therefore placed as such today.
PUPPY DOG (5,1)
- Danks-Kemish’ Samelan GI Blues at Alolfrana
Blue dog nearly 12 months. Balanced head with good eye colour, nicely bodied and shown in good coat. Although he moved happily his front is loose at the moment, and this showed when coming towards me. Preferred his tail set and bend of stifle to my second. Best Puppy Dog.
- Bryant and Hollis’ Sivamoon Storm Trooper for Phenset
10 month tri boy. Slightly heavier in head than 1 but with good eye colour. Well bodied and shorter coupled . However his tail set not quite as good and this reflected in his higher tail carriage whilst on the move.
- Taylor and Atyeo’s Samelan Come back Special
VETERAN DOG (2)
- Colton’s Sodalitas High Havoc over Ennydloc
8 year old orange shown in good coat and condition for his age. Masculine head with dark eye. Well boned, good top line and correct tail set. Balanced picture when set up. Moved out well using his tail correctly.
- Hutchinson’s Mariglen Dancing Brave over Monaysbridge.
Tri at nearly 9. He has a lovely head with a sweet expression. Correct top line and tail set. Not the same overall condition and movement as my winner with his front feet and bend of stifle letting him down.
JUNIOR DOG (3,1)
- Phillip’s Glenmaurangi Star Man
16 month tri, Clean in outline, good length of neck, well balanced, and nicely bodied for age, with a level top line and correct tail set. Good bend of stifle. Nicely muscled. Moved steadily using his tail well.
- Wright’s Sorbus Dance the Night Away
Orange, not long in junior. Slightly broader in skull and not the maturity or condition of my winner. Short coupled, would like him to be carrying a little more weight. Lifted his tail today on the move.
YEARLING DOG (5)
- Taylor’s Wansleydale Quicksilver
22 month tri shown in lovely condition and coat. Clean balanced picture when stood with good reach of neck and a strong top line, short coupled ,correct tail set .Moved happily around the ring using his tail correctly in line with his back.
- Kelly’s Alolfrana Memphis Rock
Another tri, balanced in outline with a lean head and good eye. Correct reach of neck and shoulders. Level top line. Shown in good coat. Close to one, however did not move with the same animation and head carriage as my winner.
- Danks-Kemish’s Ravensett Work of Art at Alolfrana
MAIDEN DOG (2)
- Danks-Kemish’s Samelan GI Blues at Alolfrana
- Bryant and Hollis’ Silvamoon Storm Trooper for Phenset

- Bryant and Hollis’ Silvamoon Storm Trooper for Phenset
- Taylor and Atyeo’s Samelan Come Back Special
Was placed 3rd in puppy dog. 11 month blue. Balanced lean head with dark eye. Short coupled with good tail set .Shown in good coat however moved a little close behind.
UNDERGRADUATE DOG (2,1)
- Kelly’s Alolfrana Memphis Rock
GRADUATE DOG (2 )
- Felton-Blyth’s Felsett Bugati Blue
Blue dog, attractive colour and coat. Lean head and dark eye. Level top line , would like more reach of neck and layback of shoulder together with a better bend of stifle. On the move he carried his tail.
- Jones’ Ravensett Carnelian at Redbornstoke.
2 year old orange giving his handler a hard time both standing and on the move thus difficult to go over fully. Lean head with dark eye. Well rounded bone. Level top line and correct tail set. Well muscled. Not shown in the best of coats.
POST GRADUATE DOG (6,1)
- Schoneville and Derry’s Hawklawn Khamsin at Balvenie JW
Judged this boy as a junior and gave him the class then. Now 2 and a half and maturing nicely. Lovely clean outline. Good layback of shoulder, deep in chest and level in top line Tight feet. Shown in lovely coat and condition. Best mover in the class, using his tail and holding his outline on the move.
- Oliver’s Bramstorm Oberon
Another orange of similar age. Smaller overall . Dark eye , shorter in foreface .Good layback of shoulder and short coupled . Correct tail set. Another shown in good condition. Not the movement of my winner, raising his tail a little.
- Lawton’s Wandsfell Call the Shots for Oaklaw.
MID LIMIT DOG (3,1)
- Butler’s Wandsleydale Goldsmith
Lovely orange shown in good coat and condition. Balanced head with a kind expression. Good reach of neck and layback of shoulder.Deep in body, clean in outline with a correct tail set. Good bend of stifle, nicely muscled. Moved with drive using his tail. RCC.
- Jenning’s Canteris Cool for Catz JW.
Lean, balanced headed blue with a well defined stop . Short coupled with correct top line and tail set, would like a little more depth in body and unfortunately not shown in his best coat today, which did not assist with the overall appearance when standing, however moved happily using his tail.
LIMIT DOG (6,1 ).
- Cole’s Sorbus Storm Ryder JW
Another I have previously judged and placed well. 4 years old orange shown in lovely coat, in good muscular condition and carrying nice weight. Lean in head, masculine without coarseness and with a kind expression and good eye. Short coupled and moved with drive. Although he has a good top line it needs to be checked as at times he can lose it spoiling the overall outline , as he did today in the final line up for top awards.
- Carty’s Gamerights Phoenix from the Flame
3 year old tri. Smaller in frame than my winner. Lovely balanced head and expression. shown in nice coat and good condition, well muscled. Short coupled, tight feet and level top line. Not the tail set of one and today tended to lift his tail on the move .
- Taylor and Atyeo ‘s Samelan Harris Tweed.
OPEN DOG(4,2)
- McCabe’s Sh Ch Rachdale Sea Fever JW
Dark Blue that I gave the RCC last time I judged him. My opinion of him has not changed. He has a lovely lean head and kind eye and expression. Clean in outline, good spring of rib and well constructed throughout. Now fully mature and in full coat he gave the complete picture when set up. Moved well in the class and challenge and deserved the CC today and then RBIS.
2 Thomson’s Sh Ch Mariglen Fetlar Caspellwynd JW Sh CM
Lighter blue ,lean in head, with a kind expression. Shown in good coat. but without the finish , the maturity or depth of body of 1. Moved using his tail correctly.

An enjoyable day at a very well run show celebrating their Ruby Anniversary. Thank you very much to my 2 efficient stewards. I was impressed with the final line up of both the dogs and my bitches. In full agreement with my co-judge Maureen Collier, the bitches took all the top honours. BIS SH CH Wansleydale Star Queen of Glenmaurangie, BPIS Alolfrana Sugar’N’Spice at Lynwood and BV Sh Ch Hartsett Cherry Bee. I was in full agreement that the dog Sh Ch Rachdale Sea Fever JW, should be RBIS.
My main concern was the quality of the feet. ‘Well padded, tight, with close well arched toes were the exception. So many had either hare like feet or round flat feet, usually with nails requiring attention. Add to this weak pasterns, and when the dog is coming towards you, the feet are ‘flapping’, not the elegant picture we require. That said I was very happy with my winners.

- Benrae Something Beautiful
Open 5 (3)
- Phillips, Bryant &Watkins. Sh Ch Wansleydale Star Queen of Glenmaurangie. Stunning bitch on top form. Such ring presence, she strides out with excellent forward reach, Correct footfall, driving from her well developed hindquarters. Loved her, no hesitation in awarding CC and BIS
- Wansleydale Fairie Queen at Bramstorm. So unlucky to meet her sister on such top form. Long arched neck to well laid back shoulders, deep in chest and correct length of upper arm. Level topline and tail set, moved soundly using her tail.

Thank you to the Committee of the English Setter Society of Wales for inviting me to judge the Pat Mellish Memorial Stakes Classes at your Championship Show. I always consider it a great honour to judge our lovely breed and especially so at breed shows.
I had a lovely entry of quality dogs, all presented in excellent condition, and some decisions were very close. However, a concern for me was that eyes seem to be getting lighter and this diminishes the wonderful gentle expression of the English setter.
The Pat Mellish Special Yearling Stakes (9,2 )
- Grimsdell’s Tattersett Dark Honey, beautifully balanced, very pretty 18 month o/b bitch. She has a gorgeous feminine head with dark eye giving a gentle expression. Low set ears and long reach of neck into well laid back shoulders. Well sprung rib, level topline and well developed second thigh with hocks well let down. Best mover in the class.
- Normansell’s Latin Lover Rewind for Larrenie, dark blue boy full of substance and in hard condition. He has a good spring of rib, depth of chest, and tight cat like feet. Level topline held on the move, with well developed second thigh and short tail. Moved with drive.
The Pat Mellish Memorial Open Stakes (10,2)
- Oliver’s Bramstorm Oberon, did this boy well as a very raw youngster and glad to see he has fulfilled his early promise. He provides a balanced, elegant outline with a lovely lean head and dark eye giving the gentle setter expression. Long arched neck into well laid back shoulders, great spring of rib and well off for bone. Moved soundly with style.
- Schoneville & Derry’s Hawklawn Khamsin at Balvenie JW, another quality o/b in heavier mould than my winner. Lovely short coupled boy, full of substance, masculine head and dark eye. He has great bone and well sprung rib cage and good feet. Moved well.

I would like to thank the Society for the invitation to judge this show and their outstanding hospitality. Thanks also to the exhibitors who allowed me to assess their dogs. I thoroughly enjoyed my day.
I didn’t find any sloping toplines, which seems to be creeping in, I had only one suspect mouth and one dog a little proud of his tail. All dogs were well presented albeit some were lacking schooling.

Limit Bitch (2, 1 abs)
1st (Owner’s name is missing from catalogue) Rachdale Ribbons of Pearls

I would like to thank the Society for the invitation to judge the breed open show and for their kind hospitality. I had the most efficient stewards and the fine weather allowed me to judge outside which makes a huge difference when judging this breed. I was extremely pleased with my principal winners and the overall quality of the exhibits.
VETERAN DOG (1)
1st: Brown’s Mariglen Top Gear at Yendorlech
Masculine in head with correct stop and expressive dark eye. Strong muscular neck with well laid shoulders, however I would prefer him stronger in front assembly Well bent stifles and has a good firm topline. Well off for bone and substance, he moved freely with good drive from rear.
GRADUATE DOG (1)
1st: Wilkinson’s Phenset Firestorm
This two year old orange dog was appealing in head, correct earset and good finish to muzzle. Correct front with shoulders well laid and adequate rear angulation. Would prefer a little more of him throughout. He moved out steadily and soundly but was very proud of his tail.
POST-GRAD DOG (1)
1st: Szal’s Sharnyx River Flow
This three year old tri colour was very masculine in head with correct proportions, adequate stop and dark eye and has good pigmentation. Clean, well arched neck and well laid shoulders, I would prefer more bend of stifle to give him an overall balance when stacked.
LIMIT DOG (6)
1st: Derry’s Balvenie Blue Sensation
This blue dog just rising three has a super elegance about him and presents such a well-balanced outline in profile. Handsome masculine head, with kind expression, well defined occiput and deep in muzzle. He has the best of fronts with correct shoulder lay, deep in brisket and correct short back. He won the class with his free sound movement with lovely head carriage. Should do very well in the future. Close decision for best dog. My Res Best Dog
2nd: Watts and Leather’s Walshaw Brushstrokes
Another pleasing three year old of good size and balance. Correct head proportions, dark eye and oval shape skull with ears set on low. Strong neck and firmly built throughout, slightly longer cast than my first place. Moved with good rear drive maintaining his topline. He has a very attractive dark jacket and was presented in excellent condition.
3rd: Owen’s Cornsett You My Everything
OPEN DOG (5)
1st: Atyeo and Taylor’s Samelen Comeback Special
I found this four year old blue belton dog full of quality and lovely to go over. Masculine and well-proportioned in head with kind expression. He presents a super well balanced outline when stacked with matching front and rear angles, excellent spring of rib and good length to upperarm. He has an abundance of ring presence and is a stylish and sound mover covering the ground with ease, holding his topline and has correct tail carriage. Please to award him Best Dog.
2nd: Mariglen Night Manager at Yendorlech
Placed fourth in the previous strong limit class. Masculine head with good eye colour and well defined stop. Strong neck with good body depth, strong over loin and well angulated hindquarters. He was weak in front pasterns and this let him down in front movement.
MINOR PUPPY BITCH (1)
1st: Howarth’s Moorbrook Owdidthatappen
Such a very promising youngster, she really made me smile with her enthusiasm and happy disposition. She has a very pretty and feminine head, correct low earset and dark expressive eyes. At nine months she already has good depth and is of correct short back length with ample rear angulation and strong hocks. She was full on and moved with such enthusiasm with her tail constantly wagging, so confident for a baby. Although she stood alone today, she has all the essentials in place and will do well in company I found her to be a very worthy BPIS and should have a very bright future.
VETERAN BITCH (5)
I had a super quality trio of orange belton bitches in this class.
1st: McCabe’s Sh Ch Rachdale Elegance JW
My first oozed quality and is so well made throughout. The best of head shape with lovely bright expression. Sound front assembly with strong pasterns and elbows tight in. Firm short back and well bent stifles and strong hocks. Shown in super coat and condition and such a sound mover. I had no choice but to call her back into to the challenge, she was my Res Best bitch and also Best Veteran in Show and I have now noted she is litter sister to my Best in Show.
2nd: Atyeo and Taylor’s Samelen Golden Taffeta
Very pleasing feminine head, with adequate stop and good depth to muzzle. Well laid shoulders and good body depth. Strong loin and good width to thigh. Not as strongly made in front as my winner and to be picky I thought her coat to be over trimmed in places. She has a graceful and free striding movement with a slashing tail action.
3rd: Mortimer’s Phlerdor Heart of Gold
JUNIOR BITCH (2)
1st: Loakes Goldbirch Hearts Desire
A quality youngster who is developing well. Loved her head and expression and pigmentation. Clean neck of good length with correct front and well laid shoulders, just needs to drop a tad in forechest. She has just the right amount of rear angulation which gives her an overall super balanced outline. A very enthusiastic youngster her movement was very sound with excellent rear drive once settled.
2nd: Jennings-Sharman’s Wansleydale Mayfly
This tri-colour bitch has the sweetest of head and good eye colour. Good body proportions, adequate spring of rib and good sweep of stifle. She is not as well constructed in front as my winner which showed on the move as she came towards me.
YEARLING BITCH (2)
1st: Dennis, Harris and Morgan’s Mariglen Unwrapped
Very pleasing head, with oval skull shape, dark eye and adequate stop. She is well put together with firm body, strong loin and the right amount of rear angulation. I found her very sound on the move with a good head carriage and correct topline.
2nd: Wansleydale Mayfly (repeat)
GRADUATE BITCH (1)
1st: Mariglen Unwrapped (repeat)
POST-GRAD BITCH (3)
1st: Phlerdor Will Of The Wisp
Lots to like about this four year old. Very feminine head with lovely expression and correct eye shape. Clean over neck with well laid shoulders and good length of upperarm. Correct back length with level topline, good width to thigh. Moved soundly and shown in good coat and condition.
2nd: Mandyset I Will Survive
This bitch was very reluctant to stand but once settled she allowed me to go over her. She has a beautiful head with such expressive eyes. Well laid shoulders, short back and well bent stifles. Unfortunately she was very timid with the helper and would not co-operate on the move today.
LIMIT BITCH (3)
1st: Mccabe’s Rachdale Ribbons of Pearls
A quality orange bitch that presents a well-balanced and elegant outline when stacked. She has a pretty head with correct skull to foreface proportions, strong neck and super front assembly. She has the right amount of depth and strong well angulated hindquarters, a super mover with excellent rear drive. A very close contender for Res BB.
2nd: Walker’s Wansleydale Chartreuse for Hathermere
Attractive head, with apparent occiput and correct muzzle depth. Shoulders well set back but front let down by weak pasterns. She has correct body length and strong loin. Moved steadily with correct tail action.
3rd: Kelly’s Richecca Chorus Girl
OPEN BITCH (2)
1st: Loakes Sh Ch Rachdale Painted Lace at Goldbirch
This blue bitch has a super well balanced head with a bright expression and I found her markings most attractive. I couldn’t fault her sound construction, super front assembly with elbows tight in, clean neck, adequate depth of chest, well ribbed, strong over loin with good sweep to stifle and strong hocks. She is so sound and stylish on the move, excellent head carriage and driving well from her strong hocks with a lashing tail action. She was presented in gleaming coat and tip top muscular condition and has a super bond with her handler. Please to award her Best in Show.
2nd: Sh Ch Rachdale Elegance JW (repeat)
BRACE
1st: Brown’s Mariglen Top Gear at Yendorlech and Mariglen Night Manager at Yendorlech. A well matched pair that were handled very well, I see from the catalogue they are closely related. Balanced in profile when stood together, both shown with an abundance of coat and moved well at a steady pace thoroughly enjoying themselves in the brace class.
